Test in HH 5/2010:
Tang Band made with the W5-704 at first a rather unspectacular acting midrange woofer. However, the price is spectacular: 35.7 euros for a neatly crafted chassis with cast basket and respectable magnet size, that has something!

On closer inspection, the enthusiasm continues to grow: So generous basket openings under the spider are new at Tang Band. The therefore unusually large distance between the magnetic air gap and the spider spans a particularly long voice coil bobbin. The weighs certainly a few tenths of a gram more than usual, but obviously does not hurt: This chassis still has the least moving mass of all subjects.Therefore, and because of the extra large membrane area, the W5-704 achieves excellent efficiency.
The polypropylene membrane is stored in a double-skin rubber surround. This should allow a particularly large linear deflection. And in fact, we measure lower distortion values in some areas than even the ten times more expensive scan bacon illuminator.
The sound pressure frequency response surprises with complete freedom from interference. The playback curve runs smoothly up to 5,000 hertz and then drops off without significant resonance interference. The waterfall spectrum confirms this completely positive impression.
The membrane suspension was designed to be particularly flexible, in order to achieve a low resonance frequency despite the very light membrane. This results in a big ÄEquivalent volume. Since the resonance quality of 0.37 is not very low, this also means a large housing volume: The W5-704 requires 17 to 20 liters for optimum low-frequency output, but also compensates the user with a cut-off frequency well below 40 hertz.
Conclusion: The W5-704 is not only a price-performance hit, but a really well-made midrange woofer.
