The famous wideband speaker W8-1772 by Tang Band as a kit in a horn!
Test in Sound and Sound, Issue 01-2011:
"... Tonal remains the" smoothe "1772 horn in the listening room unobtrusive. Not quite angled to the listening position, the height dose is perfect for me, here may (and should) but each ran himself Balanced voices and unusually clean and articulated cymbals face a rather slender basic tone, which, as mentioned, can be supplemented with additional insulation material in the horn course, but the restraint is good for many rooms. The middle is typical for broadband, exactly nailed in place between the speakers. but thanks this with a correspondingperfect stage presentation. Nice! ... but we are not here, so up with the level! Now the horn wakes up properly. Without altering tonally or somehow softening, the box massively pushes into the room in all frequency ranges. It goes without saying that it stays as clean as it does at room volume, and it leaves my ears unimpressed with the drums of Flim & the BB''s. The bass pushes full and unusually dry in the stomach, the snare bangs emphatically, the pelvis flicker clean around me. And yet the box emits a strange form of calm, the comparable boxes of this genre goes off. Here, the very low-distortion, high-quality chassis pays off beyond all measure. Enjoyed without switch, voices move forward sharplyfront, also there is noticeably more pepper in the presence area. That may not be everyone''s taste, I get along with it after a short listening well. After a lot of back and forth, I might even prefer this variant. On the other hand, it is less long-term, because more effective. So everything speaks for the crossover "fresh". What is ultimately the right thing for you, of course, you and your listening impressions with the 1772 Horn left. You should definitely listen to the horn, because you have nothing to lose (except maybe your old speaker treasures).
Conclusion: A classic representative of the tradition horn with noble features - that''s the best way to characterize the W8-1772-horn. The classic HoHorn-virtues such as unbridled dynamics face a clean, almost solid, yet spiced with a noticeable dose of broadband sound of the chassis. Thus, this box combines two otherwise separate worlds and is recommended in particular those who often miss dynamics and broadband generally appreciate, but in the end then but the fine resolution of a good Wiederweglers do not want to miss.
